Automobiles are, obviously enough, extremely complex machines. Aside from features like entertainment systems and custom wheel choices, pretty much all the systems work together toward a single end: making that vehicle operate safely, and efficiently, so it can meet all the expectations a realistic owner has of it.

While the failure of any sum part, which works within the machine to realize that goal, will cause failure of the whole, some systems are more important than others. If, for instance, the starter motor fails, the car or truck will simply remain parked where it is until the necessary work's carried out. Inconvenient but hardly catastrophic. If, on the other hand, your brakes fail while you're driving at speed, as an emergency situation develops in front of you, the results are far more likely to be disastrous.

Brake maintenance and repair, then, isn't something for even the gifted amateur. Only certified, professional car service technicians should be trusted.

The Need for Repair

What causes brakes to fail? Despite what the movies tell us, complete system failure is extremely rare. The vast majority of brake failure is incremental; it takes place over time, as brake performance gets worse and worse.

The first point to make about brake repair, then, is that it should be carried out sooner rather than later. If you notice the braking behavior of your vehicle changing, seek immediate professional advice. Signs of serious wear include:

  • A spongy sensation at the pedal, or slow response to applied pressure
  • Grinding noises heard all the time, or only when you brake
  • Sympathetic vibrations which accompany the grinding, either passing through the entire vehicle or just up the steering column
  • An amber light glowing in the warning lamp cluster of your dashboard (this means there's an issue with your anti-lock braking (ABS) system
  • A red warning lamp illuminating, which indicates some sort of imbalance within the whole system

What the Repair May Constitute

Perhaps the simplest repair is brake bleeding; the removal of air from inside the hydraulic system. This is the most likely cause of the spongy sensation mentioned above and a relatively quick fix. That said, if your technician discovers a fault with the system which is allowing the air ingress, that problem must be resolved, also.

The most common symptom of excessive but normal wear and tear is the abrading away of the brake pads or rotors (discs). Pads are stationary, fixed to the axles, while rotors do just that - they rotate. When you apply the brake pedal, you cause the pads to clamp down on the rotor, slowing its rotation. It's attached to the wheel, so the wheel also slows, bringing down the vehicle's speed. The process causes wear and friction, and eventually, both pads and rotors need to be replaced.
